Topic: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hello Stefan,

I write a few suggestions in case you want to take them into account to improve or add functionalities to FIS-Control.
(I own a vw golf mk4)

- Custom icons or texts for presets. Possibility to add icons or custom texts to the presets ... (With a high number of presets, I often confuse for example the different temperatures (oil temperature, IAT, coolant ...)

- New menu with a "Chronograph" to measure the time in a 0-100 km/h and 100-200 Km/h.

- New option to view an Oil level in millimeters with a graphical icon of Oil Dipstick for example ...

- Power and torque measurement option (hp and nm.)

- Possibility of calibrating the ratio of the gearbox for each of the gears (1 gear, 2nd ...), In order that the measurements are as real as possible.

- Programming the Tempomat so that if for example, it exceeds 120 km/h the tacho emits a BEEP or a signal appears on the FIS screen.

- Option to enabled an Stagging needles with the ignition on. (RPMs and Speedometer for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UemISaIwxRo)

- Possibility of scheduling changes of oil or maintenance for kilometers traveled, and that will seen in the screen of the FIS.

- ECO MODE (alarm with an excesive comsuption)

If I can think of new features, I'll tell you. Many thanks for reading me and best regards.

Hi,

Trivium88 wrote:

The problem here is that the monochrom displays don't really have a high enough resolution AND
the icons are not interchangable by the end user (on any of the FIS versions).

Trivium88 wrote:

There already is a stopwatch for 0 to 100 times. Not quite sure about the 100-200, tho.

Trivium88 wrote:

I will leave this one to Stefan ;o)) This obviously can only work on cars with a TOG installed.

Trivium88 wrote:

Nm is already possible via reading the Engine ECU (if it is supported by your ECU). HP could
be calculated from that. However, these at best questimates.

Trivium88 wrote:

Problem is that if you don't have the preset active which detects this, the FIS won't do
anything. It doesn't do background scans on any control unit or the external inputs. Your
standard instrument cluster should already provide you with a user programmable
overspeed warning.

Trivium88 wrote:

I would like to see this, too. But Stefan doesn't want to do this. If it where configuarable, it would be easy to
suite everyone ;o))

Trivium88 wrote:

The maintence schedule would be interesting, but I'll leave the answer for this one to Stefan. The
problem is, however, similar to the cruise control problem from above. If it's measuring block is not
active, it won't be able to tell you maintainence / service is upcoming

Trivium88 wrote:

ECO MODE (alarm with an excesive comsuption)

Same problem as with the cruise control / overspeed alarm.

You DO realize that most of these features are available in the ColorMFA. See topic (use Google translate) here:

Like Lightningman said, the resolution of the monochrome display doesn't allow icons. But you can define your own text labels for each preset and each measurement value. Please use the online configurator to configure them:
http://www.fis-control.de/config_en.html

Trivium88 wrote:

With the stopwatch feature of the FIS-Control you can measure the time between passing a start value and reaching the stop value. This can be used for every measurement value. See here:
http://www.fis-control.de/manual.html#c44

Trivium88 wrote:

In many cars you can read the oil level from the engine control unit. I have not made a graphical view for this. And I don't plan to do that.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hello Lightningman and Stefan,

Thanks for your answers!

- I don't remember that with http://www.fis-control.de/config_en.html I could add names to presets. In that case no icons are needed :-P thanks.

- Sorry, I did not know the stopwatch option. I'm going to try a 100-200 and I'll tell you how it works. However, I was referring to a menu with an "exclusive" aspect, like this:

- Regarding to "New option to view an Oil level in millimeters with a graphical icon of Oil Dipstick for example ..." I had seen in other devices, something similar to this (Level sensor G266 and the oil temperature, under the crankcase. Intruments channel section in vag-com):

Why does not stefan want to implement that option?  Not all "tachos" can activate that option, at least I do not know how to do it (if you know, tell me please :-) ). Honestly, as a funny option, I'd like this more, than the snake game :-P

- With regard to the possibility of scheduling changes of oil or maintenance for kilometers traveled, and that will seen in the screen of the FIS... I have seen that other "fis-control" systems for "golf mk4" can do it.

Yes, this is the TOG, I was referring to.
TOG = Temperatur und Ölstandsgeber

What I meant to say, was w/o this sensor you won't be able to use use this feature.
I'm not sure if all cars that Stefan's FIS Control supports have this sensor.

I'll leave this to Stefan to answer. The snake game isn't mine, either. However, there is
a story behind why it was included. If I remember correctly, it was a joke wish from a
an early customer and Stefan added it to FIS Control just to prove it can be done.

The quoted photo is from the ColorMFA display. This is *NOT* a standard VAG instrument
cluster, but rather a cluster with a modified display (and µ-controller) installed. However, your
car should have (in standard VAG form) a km and day counter for either WIV (long term
service, with km depending on how hard the car has to work) or at least simple service
(pure km and day counter which ever comes first).

You can't do this with FIS Control, because FC only shows values, which it is currently
measuring (e.g. "on top") . It doesn't do backround polls. Let's look at the following
example setup:

Preset 1: Configured to show the km/h
Preset 2: Configured to show the km driven (full mileage)
Preset 3: Configured to show the rpm

If Preset 1 or 3 is active, then the FC doesn't take note that the km driven (Preset 2)
increases. It also doesn't log the value (in the internal buffer). Similar if you have Preset
2 active and you want a message or a beep, etc when your speed goes above 120km/h
(your example from above), this won't work, because FC doesn't get the info (only via
Preset 1, which isn't "on top" in my example).

The reason you can't poll in the background is that if your pollwish is from a different
Control Unit, you would need to close your first CU, establish communications with the
new CU, get the value, close the second CU and finally reopen the CU for the presently
displayed value. This would take way toooooo long to do. If this is a critical value like
an engine shut off in case of too low oil pressure, your motor would have seized before
the FC even got around to telling you your oil pressure is too low. You can't multipoll via
OBD. OBD was never meant to be a playground for things like the FIS Control.

The CAN Bus is a different story as you can find all messages on the (appropriate) bus
as they are routinly repeated and delivered to all attached control units. The units
then selectively pick out which commands and messages are meant for them. The
other messages are ignored. Similar to a PC network setup. The Bussystem is also
very robust and can work even if one part of the CAN system is defect (CAN has high
and low signal values). If e.g. high is shorted out somewhere, you can still communicate
via CAN low and ground. The CAN transcievers are also smart. If the notice that they
are causing trouble on the bus system, they can decouple themselves from the bus
as not to disturb the rest of the controllers. Obviously this can lead to a limp-home
mode, but at least you can still get home.

VAG cars usually have three CAN Buses (Comfort, Drive Train and Infotainment
(Display)). So even here you still need to know which Bus to look at for the wanted
message. But the CAN BUS is a multi-message bus (unlike OBD), so you don't need
to find the exact "place" where to read out the value (OBD = measuring blocks). You
just need to know what address & the value you are looking for (very simplified
explanation).

What the FC *could* do is to poll the external sensors and inputs in the backround. The
micro used in the FIS Control should have more than enough processing power.  That
way you could use the FIS Control as a sort of state maschine. I have mentioned this
before, but Stefan isn't convinced about it ;o))).

kind regards,
Reinhard

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Good morning to all,

I have already tested the inclusion of text tags for the presets with the html congurator. To comment that it was not what I expected.

Nowadays:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM14v0xLZJY

I hoped it could be configured like this:

http://thumbs.subefotos.com/9b91a74130121879208190d2aee28286o.jpg

This should be improved.

Thanks.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

You are right, the FIS-Control does not show the labels of the measurement values in the upper two textlines.
But it is possible to label the values in all other views, like the collections view.

http://fis-control.de/images/2016-08-20_-_MAH04098snapshot.png

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

By the way. The problem with the labels in the upper two lines is, that these two lines are limited to 8 characters each.
So even "OIL 64.0C" doesn't fit, because it already has 9 characters.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hallo,

I just tried but it does not work. I'm probably doing something wrong.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hi,

I think you already found the collection section in the user's manual: http://www.fis-control.de/manual.html#c64

If you want to show a preset with the first of the four possible collections, you have to enter "1" as value for the preset. You have currently entered "3", that would mean that the third collection shall be shown.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hello again Stefan,

Yes, I read the "Collections" chapter in the instruction manual, but But the instruction manual does not make it clear what to put in the section of "Control unit CAN Group Value"  inside the "Presets" section. Or at least I did not understand it at first :-S

Tell you, that I have already managed to program the "PRESET" number 9 (for example), as "COLLECTION" number 1 (6 lines). But I had to program it manually with the right handle, because with "SEND SETTINGS" and "LOAD SETTINGS" the configuration of the FIS-Control, and exporting it to my pc (and loading the configuration into the "WEB configurator", It does not load correctly the values of the boxes of the section of "collections", I do not know why(I've tried three times and nothing. I always had the first line correctly but not the rest of the boxes, until the number 6) :-S

Well, I've finally managed to program it, but ... sniff snifff ... Names or labels do not appear! :-(

https://fotos.subefotos.com/2df2b558d7b80d57efdfa58344259a01o.jpg

Do you know why?

Thanks!

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

What was the problem with the import/export of the settings? Was the file transfer failing?
If you send me your config file (either via email or as attachment to this thread), I will have a look if everything is set up correctly.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hellos Stefan,

Please forgive me for taking time to respond to your message. I leave you download link with the configurator file. And If you could give me the names to the "collection view", I would you be very grateful. So, I learn to do it myself :-P

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hi,

the reason why you see no labels is: You have not entered them in the section "Labels for measurment values".
Here is an example how it should look like.

Post's attachments

fis_control.dat 64 kb, 4 downloads since 2017-04-21

You don't have the permssions to download the attachments of this post.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

There was a few threads about enabling CANBUS on MKIV/B5.5 clusters instead of 3LB. I would also be interested in this as my radio (Delta6) and steering wheel controls (Brazilian I-System module controlling FIS) are CANBUS.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hi,

I added support for the CAN bus of the Mk4 some weeks ago. See here:
http://fis-control.de/punBB/viewtopic.p … 1927#p1927

But actually I don't think that anyone is using it already. So it is not well tested and there is the risk for you, that it won't work in your car. Especially as I haven't been able to test compatibilty with the I-System module.

Thank you for you reply.
I assume the pins used for 3LB could be moved to the CAN locations for this change?
I read the linked ppost and in mentions that the pixel graphics are not supported, is this a fix in the works or they will never be supported via CAN?
Thanks again

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Yes, you can modify the FIS-Control cable set by swapping the pins from the 3LB to CAN. But you'll need a different connector for the FIS-Control. The socket for the 3LB is a 6-pin socket. For the CAN bus it is only 4 pins.

I have not found a way to display pixel graphics via CAN. I am not sure if that is even possible. I don't think that I can fix that.

Re: Suggestions and possible improvements

Hello 2stroke,
sadly, it is not really possible to do this with FIS-Control.
Stefan tried to build this feature, but the needles just sweeped too slowly - not fast, like in (f.e.) B8.
Also, not all needles have the same moving speed. That looks really crappy.
Beside that, it takes too much time for the FIS-Control to start up, connect to the instruments cluster and send the needed signals. You would usually already start the engine when the needles start moving.
